Annotation
The article substantiates the need to develop high school students’ reading literacy through the Foreign Language course and demonstrates the relevance of organizing
this process for its contribution to students’ acquisition of functional literacy as a prerequisite for their successful functioning in the modern world. In this regard, the article aims to provide a theoretical substantiation and practical development of tools for forming high school students’ reading literacy in foreign language lessons. The leading research methods were theoretical analysis of domestic and foreign sources on the problem, analysis of educational documents and current textbooks, as well as experimental teaching. The article presents a refined set of reading literacy skills, reflecting the level-based nature of text comprehension as well as tools for their development as components of the technology for developing high school students’ reading literacy. These skills are comprised of authentic multicultural foreign-language texts and sets of receptive and productive problem-oriented exercises, selected and organized using appropriate criteria to ensure their functional focus. The developed materials were tested experimentally, demonstrating both the optimality of the identified set of reading literacy skills and the effectiveness of the tools created
for their development, which allows recommending these tools for use in the practice of teaching foreign languages in high school.
