The article discusses various aspects of perception of English pronunciation types: as perceived by British native speakers, Russian L2 learners of English and the evaluation
of Russian students’ social status by English speakers based on their pronunciation. The research described in the article is conducted within the framework of perceptual
dialectology, studying the perception of socio-territorial variation of pronunciation by naïve native English speakers and their assessment of social attractiveness of speech quality of informants. The methodology of attitudes towards English accents study is diverse and includes matched guise techniques, a method of stylistic variation of speech (from reading of word pairs to unprepared speaking), mapping the perception of «correctness» and «pleasantness» of pronunciation, a method of perceptual scaling, used for an auditory analysis of prosodic speech characteristics. The impact of gender factor in the complex analysis of speech perception is a significant parameter in the examination of variation. In British linguistic literature perceptual dialectology is based on historical realities and established stereotypes of various pronunciation varieties perception, which are supported in collective consciousness by means of film industry. For foreign language learners it was an interesting perceptual experience when Russian learners’ speech with different language acquisition levels was perceived by English speakers. The adequate perception of the voices
of British film characters by Russian L2 learners testifies to their high level of socio-cultural competence. Advanced students majoring in linguistics can identify main types of British pronunciation as well as comprehend the author’s artistic intent in the course of perceptual analysis of phonetic variation of film characters’ speech.
