Annotation
The research addresses the issue of translating English syntactic compounds into Russian with the help of machine translation apps (Google Translator, Yandex Translator,
Promt) and their manual translation. The lack of identical structures in Russian challenges translators who have to find suitable equivalents relying on their own competence and the research objective here is to find regular translation patterns. A great variety of operating machine translation (MT) apps sets another challenge as it compels translators to opt for the most effective ones; the authors test some of MT systems and determine which of them best translate some syntactic constructions. Empirical material is taken fromfiction and includes 150 sentences in English and their official translation into Russian, to reveal the rationale behind structural transformations of syntactic compounds when they are rendered from English into Russian. The choice of translation strategy is closely related to the fact that Russian and English are the languages of different types. The findings helped work out translation strategies applicable to English syntactic compounds.
