FEATURES OF THE INTERPRETATION OF THE IMAGE OF THE SNOW MAIDEN IN THE POEM BY B. L. PASTERNAK «SPRING AGAIN»

Annotation

The article examines the ways the image of the Snow Maiden is interpreted in the poem «Spring Again» by Boris L. Pasternak included in the «Peredelkino» poetic collection. The starting point for our reflections is a well-known fact: the modern Russian cultural paradigm sees the image of Snow Maiden associated primarily with the «Spring fairy tale» by A. N. Ostrovsky. All Russian writers who turned to this image to one degree or another, employed motifs and themes from Ostrovsky’s fairy tale play (the opposition of cold and heat, winter and summer, the idea of a natural annual cycle, the idea of prohibition and punishment for violating this prohibition, the idea of love as a desirable but disastrous beginning, etc.). Thus, it proves even more interesting to trace what semantic connotations Pasternak borrowed and what new things he brought to interpret the image of Snow Maiden. The artistic universe of Pasternak’s poem «Spring Again» features the image of Snow Maiden as the one identified not with winter, but with spring; Snow Maiden embodies a spontaneous spring beginning. The poet abandons the traditional opposition of winter – spring or winter – summer, the idea of predictable, expected alternation of different seasons, which forms the basis for the composition of the poetic cycle «Peredelkino». Such a constant alternation of seasons reveals the pledge of Pasternak’s lyrical hero’s own immortality, every winter the hero dies together with nature and predictably resurrects in the spring. In this context, the death of Snow Maiden Spring (which is implied, though not described) loses its traditional tragic coloring: Snow Maiden will definitely return in a year. Pasternak interprets the image of Snow Maiden as the one of the archetypal female images that embodies a certain elemental principle (the element of spring, the element of nature, the element of life as such). Such an understanding of female images is generally typical of the Russian poetry of the early twentieth century, which was interpreted by Pasternak.
