Annotation

The article discusses the ways of Russian-to-French transferring of the Old Russian proper names and ethnonyms found in «The Tale of Igor’s Campaign». The analysis is carried out on the material of a parallel corpus of 13 translation texts made in the period from 1823 to 2020, as well as used by translators as original Russian texts and reconstructions. The relevance of the study is due to the interest of modern domestic and foreign translation studies towards the study of translation multiplicity. In addition, this article not only considers the issues of translation plurality, but also regards the plurality of original texts. The work implies various methods of analyzing parallel texts; the author of the article operates with the terminology developed in the works of Russian-speaking, French-speaking and English-speaking researchers. The aim of the study is to describe the lexical variability while translating proper names and ethnonyms into French in the case of translation plurality. In the course of the work, the reasons for lexical variability in the translation of the declared classes of vocabulary were established (various original texts, different interpretations of proper names, ethnonyms and «dark places», the period of translation release, the use of various translation techniques), the types of translation correspondences were classified and described, as well as some features of French translation discourse were revealed in diachrony. The results presented in the article make it possible to determine the most commonly used translation techniques for translating the Old Russian proper names and ethnonyms used in «The Tale of Igor’s Campaign» into French, which can be used in studies of multiple translations of other medieval texts or translations of «The Tale of Igor’s Campaign» into other languages.
