Annotation

The article examines the concept of art critic in Chinese linguaculture. The aim of the study is to draw the borderline between its everyday and scholarly use. The work involves definitional, contextual analyses and case method. The material was drawn from the Chinese Internet segment of Baidu, as well as monolingual and bilingual explanatory dictionaries. The hypothesis was that the growing role of the art critics and their guiding function both in the theory of art and public consciousness predetermine the differences in the semantic scope of the scholarly and everyday concepts of art critic in Chinese linguaculture. The concept of art critic in Chinese has no fixed linguistic expression. In everyday consciousness, art critic (Hieroglyphs ) often functions alongside art figure (Hieroglyphs ), though these lexical units are not synonyms being similar only formally. (Hieroglyphs) ‘art theorist’ is understood as an art scholar whereas in everyday sense, the sphere of professional interests of this specialist is limited to the theory of art. The scholarly, professionally oriented concept of art critic in Chinese linguaculture is not limited to knowledge of art, but includes such aspects as «official», «teacher», «manager », implying qualities such as authority, high social status, freedom of speech, impeccable moral principles, comprehensive knowledge beyond art criticism, the ability to direct the development of modern art theory, and influence public opinion. The prospects of the proposed approach lie in the integration of linguacultural and ontological factors in the study of terminological systems.
