Annotation

The article is dedicated to the study of motivational-political speeches, which are interpreted to be a variety of a hybrid discourse. The aim of the research is to determine main features of American motivational-political discourse and to consider the rhetorical means used in it. The actuality of the research is determined by the social importance of political and motivational discourses, consistent development of political linguistics, necessity for public orators to find the most optimal means of linguopragmatic influence correlating with the motivational function of the language. The novelty of the research is explained by the introduction of the term ‘motivational-political discourse’ as well as the identification of its most basic characteristics. The research methods include discourse-analysis, content-contextual, and linguostylistic types of analysis. The results of the research allow to define motivation-political discourse as a specific hybrid discourse, apart from motivational and political spheres, often integrating moralizing, religious, historical and sports narratives. It is often built around pivotal for the American mentality concepts: ‘dream’, ‘justice’, ‘God’, ‘fight’, ‘courage’, ‘success’. The following themes can be characterized as the recurring ones in the analyzed communication sphere: the necessity of fight for justice, the possibility of overcoming poverty and achieving the outlined goals, the importance of following the God’s commandments, moral obligation before the country, the uniqueness of the American nation, the inevitability of mistakes and temporary failures but at the same time the emphasis on the latter’s constitutive role in gaining experience which eventually allows one to win over the opponent. The further study of motivational- political discourse seems to be undoubtedly interesting and actual corresponding to the active development of the theory of hybrid discourses and the growing awareness that the real-life communication rarely if at all is limited to one discourse.
