Annotation
The study proves relevant due to the growing interest of linguists and translation experts in the field of digital accessibility for people with disabilities, in the adaptation of cinematic content for the blind — audio description. The article aims at revealing the concept of audio description and analyzing this type of intersemiotic translation in its linguistic and translation aspects. The research sample includes Russian feature films «The Slave» (dir. K. Shipenko, 2019), «The Last Bogatyr 2» and «The Last Bogatyr 3» (dir. D. Dyachenko, 2020–2021), which is due to the features of cinematic environment reflected in them. The storyhero of the comedy film «The Slave» is transported from a modern Russian city into the rural environment of the 19th century, which requires an adequate interpretation of both the realities of Slavic peasant life a century and a half ago, and the realities reflecting the modern urban way of life. Concerning the fantasy film «The Last Bogatyr», the audio commentator needs to reflect the perception of the metropolis by fairy-tale characters who, by chance, moved from the magical world to the streets of Moscow. As for the actual linguistic aspect, the article substantiates the sounding text of the audio description as a hybrid that combines the features of both narrative (with a predominant use of action verbs) and descriptive
(with a predominant use of nouns and adjectives) discourses, excluding the use of subjective judgments, assessments, assumptions or translator’s comments when translating visual into verbal. The author emphasizes the importance of creating a text/discourse that meets the key aspects of these types with an indispensable reliance on the film video sequence and its fixed time code as well as translator’s extensive background knowledge — audio commentator for an adequate and truly objective verbal representation of the habitat and what is happening on the screen for blind viewers.
