Annotation
The article is a pioneer attempt to consider the estimates given by A. M. Gorky to the writer I. A. Novikov from 1903 to 1934. The relevance of the study is due to the insufficient study of Novikov’s creative heritage and its place in the Russian literary process of the first third of the twentieth century. In this regard, this article aims at identifying the reception of his work by one of his leading contemporaries — Gorky, who acted as a writer, publisher, literary critic and of literary process organizer. The material of the analysis is letters, critical articles and memoirs. The author introduces historical and literary context: Bunin’s correspondence, as well as new archival documents — V. Veresaev’s letters to Novikov. The article traces the dynamics of estimates given by Gorky to Novikov over several decades. It is shown that Gorky underestimated Novikov, denying him identity and creative evolution, although modern criticism put the writer on a par with Bunin, Zaitsev and Shmelev. At the same
time, Gorky followed Novikov’s publications and attracted him to his literary projects. The findings make it possible to understand Novikov’s literary reputation before and after the revolution, as well as the features of the literary process of the early twentieth century, including the development of fiction, criticism and publishing.
