Annotation
The article considers various types of masks used by the characters of A. P. Chekhov’s play «The Cherry Orchard» in communication with each other. The change in the situational roles of actors, their illusory representations have a different character. It can be divided into three types, which we conditionally call divergence (from unity to diversity), convergence (from diversity to unity), interference (interaction of the first two types). The illusions of the characters in «The Cherry Orchard» refer to the future, acquiring a prognostic character in the projection on the history of Russia in the 20th century. Some heroes go through a life – death – life cycle. Often the change of masks and roles deprives the characters of their typicality, disconnects them from reality (Lopakhin’s insanity and «play of imagination»). Some characters are able to change several roles in a very short time (Gaev), others, on the contrary, are constant (Vary’s roles in dreams and reality). The most complex type, an interference of masks, is represented by Ranevskaya: a penitent sinner, a loving mother and a her daughter’s money-grubber.
