Annotation

The article examines the ceremonial genre of the French speech practice known as hommage, which dates back to the 17th century. It analyzes the semantic development of the lexeme hommage. The aim of the analysis is to identify the stages of modification of the lexeme used to denote this discursive genre. The leading method employed is linguistic semiometry, which allows for the determination of changes in the word meaning within the context of its usage. The multidimensional scope of the meanings expressed by the lexeme hommage is revealed through the identification and analysis of diagnostic contexts. It is established that the conceptual renewal of the word under study involves both its conceptual and evaluative components. An expansion of the referential sphere of the lexeme’s functioning is observed — from its original personal sphere of vassal subordination to the institutional sphere of academic and public activity. This expansion is based on the extension of evaluative meanings of solidarity and collectivism, which contribute to the lexeme’s development as an axiologeme. The article notes that commemorative ceremonial speeches (hommages) in the French academic environment express national and cultural traditions of ritual etiquette.
