Annotation
In the 1960s and 1970s, structural methods of language learning occupied an important place in Soviet linguistics, and the «Meaning ↔ Text» model by I. A. Melchuk was particularly popular. It seemed that a model for a specific language was a set of rules that should have a «purely mechanical application» on a computer. Linguistics w as understood as a natural science. In recent decades, on the contrary, the focus in Russia has been on humanitarian aspects, and the attention has shifted from the structure of language to the study of language functioning. The fields of research have expanded significantly, but the rigor of the approaches has decreased dramatically.
