Annotation

The article is devoted to the problem of identifying the specifics of linguistic (de)legitimation of bullfighting in the Spanish mass media space. The study is characterized by scientific novelty due to the fact that for the first time bullfighting is considered as an object of (de)legitimation. The purpose of the study is to identify the strategies and tactics of legitimation and delegitimation of bullfighting in the Spanish mass media discourse, as well as to analyze the linguistic means that actualize them. The results of the analysis of the empirical material allow us to conclude that bullfighting is legitimized through the rationalization strategy, the implementation of which occurs with the help of instrumental tactics, the tactics of «definition» and «prediction». Thus, the legitimacy of bullfighting is constructed: 1) through a positive assessment of bullfighting by pointing to its cultural and historical significance; 2) positioning bullfighting as a profitable business; 3) predicting the negative economic consequences of the abolition of bullfighting; 4) defining bullfighting through a human right to freedom. The delegitimization of bullfighting is most effectively carried out using the strategy of moral evaluation, the actualization of which is aimed at its discrediting through the formation of an idea of the cruelty and senselessness of this cultural tradition. At the same time, the (de)legitimizing effect is always enhanced by the strategy of appealing to authority, which is represented by experts, government agencies and the opinion of the majority. The conducted analysis indicates that in the mass media space of Spain, there is an interpenetration of two opposing processes — the legitimization and delegitimization of bullfighting — which, in turn, indicates the difference in views of modern Spanish society regarding this cultural tradition.
