Annotation
The works of A. M. Gorky have always been of interest not only to specialists in Gorky studies, philologists, but also to a wide range of readers. In an attempt to create his own style, he tried to write in different genres, manners, resorted to various expressive means of language, mixed literary trends, which became a distinctive feature of his artistic heritage. The article examines the technique of zoomorphism, which Gorky widely used throughout his creative path in order to understand the souls of his characters. For the study, works written by him in different years were selected: the story «Makar Chudra», the stories «Foma Gordeyev» and «Mother», the trilogy «Childhood», «In People», «My Universities». Based on a comprehensive analysis of the above texts, descriptive and comparative methods, it was possible not only to study the character of a particular character in more depth and understand his mental organization, but also to identify examples of the situational use of zoomorphic figurative comparisons. In some cases, an overlap of zoomorphic metaphors was observed: Gorky gave a situational comparison to a hero with a stable zoomorphic characteristic
with other representatives of the animal world, depending on the behavioral reaction to a particular circumstance. As a result of the study, the following conclusion was made: in some cases, the writer resorted to a one-time situational use of zoomorphisms as a literary device, in others — as a way of revealing and understanding the souls
of the characters. All together, it allowed a more profound and detailed study of the author’s intent in relation to the heroes of his works and to reveal the versatility of Gorky as an artist, philosopher and person.
