Annotation

The article is devoted to a special theme in Russian literature — the theme of suffering, its functioning in the works of prominent writers of the XIX and XX centuries; the influence of F. M. Dostoevsky’s religious-philosophical and aesthetic concepts on the literature of the XX century is investigated. The origins of the theme of suffering going back to the Bible are traced, its philosophical context and existential issues related to it are considered. On the basis of biographical, comparative, intertextual methods of research, as well as cultural-historical approach, the views on literature and the theme of suffering of F. M. Dostoevsky, A. P. Platonov, V. P. Astafiev are considered, excursions are made into the works of Russian and foreign writers who in one way or another found a connection with the theme. The sufferings of literary characters are differentiated: physical, moral, existential sufferings are distinguished. Often they are caused by social vices, historical reasons, moral deafness of others, but they can be caused by existential chaos, dragging a person regardless of his will. It is shown that writers searched for ways to overcome suffering; realising and comprehending it in different ways, most often Dostoevsky, Platonov and Astafyev represented suffering as a metaphysical constant inherent in man and his consciousness, so the way to overcome suffering is often connected in their works with utopian ideas, with overcoming people’s alienation from each other.
