Annotation

The article regards the specific features of magical realism prose, manifested in Sergey A. Klychkov’s (1889‒1937) novels «The Sugar German», «Chertukhinsky Balakir», «Prince of Peace». The emphasis is on the principle of the miracle of life, which defined the author’s concept of time, temporality, space as well as determined the tone of the narrative, restraint from psychological analysis, and the main character’s psycho type. It is P. Florensky’s along with V. Zenkovsky’s findings that contribute to explaining the miracle, realizing the significance of characters’ and the narrator’s subjective perception of the explicit and hidden realities. The author accentuates the difference between the phenomenon of the subtle world in magical realism and the one in mystical prose. There is an assumption made about the sources of various images and motifs in Klychkov’s novels. The analysis of the plot composition relies on the classification of the game proposed by R. Kayua. The article ends up with the conclusions about the features of magical realism expressed by both Klychkov’s contemporaries and researchers of our time. Hermeneutical and comparative approaches to texts have revealed the typological similarity of Russian magical realism and Latin American. The works of B. K. Zaitsev, N. A. Klyuev, S. D. Krzhizhanovsky, A. I. Kuprin, A. M. Remizov, I. S. Shmelev, R. Dario, A. Carpentier, K. Castaneda, G. Marquez, K. Palma, etc. are involved. The results of the analysis add to clarifying the theoretical aspects of magical prose in general. The relevance of the study is determined by the popularity of magical realism in modern literature.
