Annotation

The works of an Austrian writer, teacher, artist and politician Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) reflect the main tendencies in German-language literature of the post-Romantic period. Traditionally, writer’s legacy is considered within the framework of the Biedermeier current in German culture and literature of the XIX century. At the same time, researchers tend to evaluate the interaction process between Romanticism and Biedermeyer in different ways, which determines the relevance of this article. The purpose of the study is to prove that Biedermeyer literary traditions were largely formed on the basis of romantic aesthetics and literature, while the romantic material in the works of Biedermeyer’s writers and poets was reinterpreted and represented in a different format instead of rejecting. Culturological, functional and typological approaches to the analysis of a literary text prompted the author to prove that romanticism within the framework of Biedermeyer changes its former scales, becomes chamber, acquires the signs of the philistine world, but does not abandon its artistic material. The analysis of A. Stifter «Wildflowers», which is lesser known, shows that it fully embodies the features of the literary Biedermeyer. Moreover, the typical feature of the author’s artistic world in this text is its references to images, plot moves, ideas of famous romantic works, to romantic aesthetics in general. The author comes to the conclusion that such a duality of A. Stifter’s work emphasizes the typology of Biedermeyer during the transition from Romanticism to realism in the German-speaking cultural space.
