CORNFLOWERS AND BLUEBELLS WITHIN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE PICTURE OF THE WORLD

Annotation

The article considers a fragment of the linguistic picture of the world associated with the floronyms cornflower and bell functioning in the sphere of figurative derivation and in the system of figurative comparisons. The relevance of the research is due to linguists’ increasing interest in identifying connotations and revealing background knowledge related to the lexical semantics of nouns of different lexico-semantic groups, as well as the relatively small study of the derivational and phraseological aspects of the problem. In this regard, there is an issue begging the question concerning the influence of the word etymology, its derivational history, on developing a system of figurative-metaphorical and figurative-symbolic meanings. Relying of text fragments illustrating common language figurative structures and the principle directions of their author’s transformations, the problem of correlating objective and subjective principles in the linguocognitive phenomenon «worldview» is touched upon. The key research methods employed are as follows: the method of dictionary definitions analysis, contextual analysis, along with elements of component and word-formation analysis. The author comes to the conclusion that the significance of certain nominations in the aspect of tackling the issues in their figurative, metaphorical, symbolic meanings is determined by both extralinguistic and intra-linguistic factors. It is shown that subjective, naive representations of the language group are a) culturally conditioned; b) associated with objective features of a particular plant; c) are regularly reflected in the system of Russian phraseology and figurative derivation. The common and distinctive features of the cornflower and bell nominations are revealed from the point of view of their representation in the Russian language picture of the world. The new language material comes relevant when emphasizing the productivity of an integrated approach to identifying the structures of language knowledge associated with the nominations of specific subjects. This approach involves the analysis of nominations in terms of their derivational history and actual lexical meaning; in terms of their functioning in the system of figurative derived vocabulary and phraseology; in terms of linguistic semantics fixed in dictionaries and possible directions of the author’s transformation.
