Annotation
The article considers literary mask as the leading means of creating the hero’s psychological portrait in the novel «Billy Summers» by S. King. The study’s relevance is due to an important issue of personal identification and self-identification in the society, which has been and remains the subject in fiction and being rep resented in various forms. The article aims at identifying the phenomenon of mask as a cultural code of the era while studying the mask changing process as an artistic imagery form. The leading study method is hermeneutical analysis, which enables to explore different mask types: the author’s and the hero’s masks, which are inseparable and serve to reveal the core novel themes. The primary literary mask creating strategies are narrative techniques such as delegating the narration and switching the narrator, character’s internal monologues, different literary devices and language means. The analysis claims that in his new novel S. King experiments with such form of imagery as a character mask. He creates a psychologically reliable portrait of his ambiguous hero lost in his roles and confused with his masks. The author convincingly presents the reasons why this happens and reveals the negative impact of masks on the protagonist’s identity. The article also proves that decoding this and other novels containing masks can be challenging for the reader and researcher who are supposed to identify and describe literary mask types, as well as to unmask them and recognize the true hero’s face.
