Annotation
The article considers the nominations of birds in the novel by M. A. Bulgakov «The Master and Margarita» regarded as components of the ornithological code. The concept of «cultural code» is seen as a system of verbal signs, ornithonyms. The purpose of the study is to correlate the symbolic meaning of ornithonyms in the Slavic pagan and, above all, in the Christian worldview with their author’s interpretation and to prove the consistency and integrity of the ornithological code in the novel. The signifier «A» of such a system is a textual thematic group of 84 wordforms with a common «bird» seme. The names of 17 bird species are included (along with the titles of restaurant dishes). The signified «B» of the symbolic system is two main meanings in Slavic pagan and Christian symbolism: 1) «bird as the spirit of evil, death» and 2) «bird as the soul of man, man himself». Most species of birds belong to unclean birds in the Christian tradition (rook, crow, sparrow, owl, parrot) and therefore have an infernal meaning of Satan’s attributes and his retinue, as well as everything connected with the world of the dead. Pure birds (chicken, rooster, swallow, pigeon) most often reflect the spiritual world of the characters. If the signifier is an ornithonym, then the signified is a word, phrase, or even a sentence from the nearest context containing a general cultural meaning varied by the author in one way or another. The unit of analysis is a paradigm consisting of the signifier in a certain episode of the novel and its signified in the immediate context, for example, «black birds on Patriarch’s ponds → Satan». The signified is actualized by the cultural (Christian, biographical) connotation of both the ornithonyms themselves and the words decoding their symbolism. Metaphorical epithets and gradation series are of great importance for generating the symbolic meaning.
