Annotation

Russian literary tradition witnesses the image of a righteous man emerging in parallel with the vanishing ideas about the true hero. Classical writers, when creating images of righteous heroes, rely not only on hagiographic religious or hagiographic-idyllic traditions, but also on the phenomenon of righteousness that has developed in popular culture under the influence of Christianity. The righteous way of life implies characters following spiritual and moral laws of ideal existence. The article analyzes the features of the artistic embodiment of a righteous hero image in Boris P. Ekimov’s story «The White Road» based on the traditions laid down by classic writers of the XIX–XX centuries. There is a strong bond between Nikolay S. Leskov’s views on the righteous, Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn’s story «Matrenin’s Yard» and Boris P. Ekimov’s story «The White Road» revealing a continuous typological connection found in the moral essence of the characters’ images, dating back to Christian ethics.
