Annotation

Social and property inequality in the society has always been one of the most urgent problems within the framework of rhetorics. The deprived majority and the wealthy minority have mutual claims against each other. Bunin is sincere in his love towards his heroes crushed by need. They seem downtrodden, though they preserve their original submissiveness and unpretentiousness. Bunin’s early works feature these characters frozen in their childish attitude for the rest of their lives without any sense of protest or at least bewilderment at the obvious injustice of the world order. Unfortunately, they never find a way out of their hopeless situation until the end of their lives. Bunin likes to portray elderly and senior people who have forgotten about the bad and cruel past. The image of this peasant old age with abandonment and defenselessness, with humiliated human nature, presents a century-old account to the society, to the arrangement of life as well as appeals for justice.
