Annotation
The research regards the functions of English interjections in the speech of men and women belonging to the American linguistic culture. The study proves relevant due
to the need of studying interjections as signals of emotions in the era of global emotionalization of the modern communicative space. The paper aims at identifying interjections used in the speech of American men and women and tackle the functions they perform. The study relies on the tenth season of the American sitcom «Friends». The principal linguistic method applied is the method of context analysis. The empirical data include 1575 interjections. The largest number of interjections in the speech of men and women corresponds to the emotive function, which is due to the nature of interjections. Even bigger number of emotive interjections in the speech of women indicates the unconscious verbalization of heteropolar emotions, which is typical of women, while in the speech of men there is a greater number of interjections corresponding with the conative function, responsible for expressing will and regulating the communication process. The paper reveals that all registered interjections in the conative, phatic, hesitation functions and some of the most frequent interjections in the emotive function are gender neutral, since their qualitative composition in the speech of men and women is identical. The findings contribute to systematizing the data on the functional orientation of English interjections used
in the speech of American men and women.
