Annotation

The article regards the formation of a special type of periodicals — trench newspapers. The author examines the historical prerequisites for the emergence of trench newspapers as such, and also formulates the distinctive features of the Paraguayan media system in the mid-XIXth century. In the analysis, the author refers to the texts of El Centinela, a bilingual (Guarani and Spanish) trench newspaper printed during the war against the Triple Alliance (Spanish: Guerra contra la Triple Alianza, 1864–1870). The paper also establishes the role of this type of periodicals in the formation of the Paraguayan national identity and the construction of the binary opposition «friend-or-foe» in the military press.
