Annotation
The article raises the question of memoirs as a source of studying the biography of the writer and the literary background of the century. This kind of nonfiction is a confessional narrative about the time being and people around, which is viewed through the prism of social, literary and artistic life. The list of authors writing memoirs about Gorky united workers, literary critics, and statesmen. The memoirs by B. F. Malkin, I. A. Gruzdev, Y. A. Pokrovsky, A. E. Bogdanovich, etc. contribute to realizing the image of the writer in all the complexity of his worldview and artistic talent. The issues to be discussed include the one concerning the reasons for eliminating some fragments of memories, about fake memoirs, about disputing some of the testimonies being legitimate.
