Annotation
The article examines «vogue words» and catch-phrases — the current vocabulary — together with a trail of related stylistic devices in English, in the second half of 2024,
based on the news bulletins of The Telegraph newspaper. Both common nouns and proper names come into focus, reflecting the current units of the British lexicon and onomasticon of this time period, as well as various stylistic devices that convey associated semantic dominants. An attempt is made to model the unfolding of the corresponding fragment of the lexical structure over this time period using the cognitive matrix model. This approach also allows us to highlight the main leitmotifs of British socio-political life during this period and their assessment in the conservative discourse: the activities of the Labour government led by Keir Starmer and their impact on various groups of the population (pensioners, landlords and farmers), as well as resonant scandals and incidents (the Manchester brawl with subsequent protests, the Southport murder with subsequent riots throughout the country, etc.). The results can be used in further studies of the current English vocabulary, as well as in teaching theoretical and practical courses at linguistic departments.
