Annotation

The article examines one of the peripheral ways of expressing comparison — the subordinate determinant with comparative semantics. The place of such sentences among subordinate determinants, the features of their comparative meaning, and their place in the comparative system of the Russian language are revealed. Among the subordinate determinants, such units represent, according to V. V. Vinogradov’s terminology, a kind of subordinate determinative of the distributive or connective type. The specificity of comparative semantics is shown in the fact that such units represent a kind of reference comparison in which an object is compared to its class. The subordinate clause implements a textual generative type of the communicative register. In the comparative system of the Russian language they also show proximity to the reference comparison in which the object of comparison is compared to its class. Such subordinate determinants can be transformed into a separate sentence. A significant feature of such units is their belonging to a comparison which is conveyed as a special textual structure with pronominal components like this. When converted into a separate sentence, such units should be considered as one of the ways to express a reference comparison.
