Annotation
The paper presents a linguo-cultural analysis of the concept of foreign, considered as one of the poles within the archaic binary opposition «close – foreign», and its verbalization by free phrases. This mental unit is originally taken for a conceptual domain which can be represented by: linguistic units, various types of knowledge, notions, concepts, conceptions and artifacts. In the course of theoretical reasoning the nature of the phenomenon is concretized, a conclusion is made that the essence of the cultural senses, underlying the conceptions of foreignness, can be concentrated in a concept. The latter can be defined as a condensed outcome of the comprehension of a complicated world of states, relations, properties, and its content can be studied by investigating into the valency links of the linguistic units (free phrases) which verbalize it. These can be hypothesized to be synonymic rows of adjectives. Their valency links can serve as a basis of an investigation into main Russian and British national distinctions in the conception of foreignness. To conclude, in the British linguistic consciousness foreignness can lie in the same plane with strength; time of coming into being; quality and the sphere of activities it is applied to; it can be perceived and cognized; something/ someone can be made foreign, one can remain foreign or keep being foreign. The reflection of foreignness in the Russian linguistic consciousness is closely connected with mental, spiritual, cultural stereotypes, which form ethnic, religious, etc. oppositions. Its perception can be accompanied by negative emotions, it can have the highest possible/ comparable/ mutual manifestation, it can also be in progress. Finally, a general conclusion is made that in the British linguistic consciousness, foreignness is intertwined with perception and logic while in the Russian one, it can be mingled with emotions, and spiritual, religious, cultural conceptions.
