Annotation

The article attempts to systematize V. B. Shklovsky’s judgments about the poetics of Leo Tolstoy’s works, which determines the relevance and novelty of the work. Recognizing the most objective and productive for further research the approach of researchers who recognize the links between the critics of the formal school and the traditions of Russian classical literature of the XIX century, the author compares Tolstoy’s judgments about the automaticity of perception, about the techniques of character creation, about the specificity of artistic speech, etc. with Shklovsky’s theoretical formulations. It is argued that the words reception, material, thing, often used in Tolstoy’s writings, became terms in the formalists’ concept. It is concluded that the perception of the work of the 19th century classicist contributed to the formation of some provisions of the formalist theory. Studying the poetics of «War and Peace», «Anna Karenina » and other works, Shklovsky largely followed the writer’s reasoning about the laws of writing craft and applied Tolstoy’s formulations. Interpretations of the techniques used by the writer in his work turned out to be, firstly, adequate to Tolstoy’s poetics, and, secondly, formed the basis for a number of general theoretical positions of the formal school of Russian literary studies.
