Annotation

The article is devoted to the analysis of the novel by the modern writer M. Prince «The Latinist» (Prince, 2022) from the point of view of the peculiar interpretation of the ancient myth of Daphne and Apollo. The relevance of the research is due to the fact that the mythopoeically rich work has not yet received a literary assessment, its ideological, thematic and artistic features have not been identified. The article is aimed at studying the mythological framework of the novel, which performs many artistic functions. The leading methods in the research were hermeneutical and structural methods. In the course of the study of the transformation of the traditional story of Daphne and Apollo, the author’s approaches to the representation of the myth, as well as their role in revealing the theme and idea of the work, were outlined. The story of the nymph and the son of Zeus appears in the novel in several guises.: as a literary work written by the ancient Roman poet Ovid, as a metaphor for the relationship of the main characters, as a work of art represented by a sculpture by Bernini, as a game between the author and the reader, which is realized in the history and works of ancient Roman poets invented by the writer, as well as a subject of ironic reflection. The reevaluation of the myth of Daphne and Apollo allowed the writer to give it a feminist sound, and its projection onto the lives of the heroes of modern reality — to create an interesting plot. All facets of the interpretation of the myth emphasize the unfading interest in the ancient heritage and its relevance in the modern world.
