Annotation

The article studies the inventory of phrasal particles used in everyday communication by native speakers of Taiwanese Guoyu (TGYu). The study proves relevant due to the contradiction between the growing interest in Taiwan as a subject of academic inquiry and the persistent stereotypes among Sinologists regarding the language and discursive reality of its residents. The article aims at substantiating the distinctions between phrasal particles in TGYu and those in Mainland Putonghua (PTH) by examining their expression, semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic features. The principal research method is a comparative-contrastive analysis, supplemented by a corpus-based approach and contextual analysis of usage. The empirical data include authentic texts in TGYu and PTH, encompassing oral dialogues, messenger correspondence, written sources, and media content. The paper reveals that TGYu phrasal particles possess a distinct expression plan and unique semantic-pragmatic functions, differentiating them from PTH particles, which is attributed to the diachronic development of TGYu as a distinct variant. For instance, Taiwanese speakers frequently replace normative particles of the /a/ series (/-a/, /ya/, /wa/) with those of the /o/ series (/-o/, /yo/, labialized /uo/), prefer /lo:/ series over /la/, and widely use particles like /er yi/, /ye/, /ei/, considered archaic in PTH. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of TGYu phrasal particles and offer recommendations for their integration into educational processes within the framework of Sinology as a comprehensive and objective study of the Chinese world.
