Annotation

The article studies Dostoevsky’s early story «The Mistress» through the prism of the hagiographic tradition. The relevance of the work is due to the growing interest in modern science to the comprehensive study of F. M. Dostoevsky’s heritage. The writer’s early work is still understudied, and the story «The Mistress» in relation to the genre of hagiography has not yet been considered by scholars. The method of intertextual analysis, which implies studying a fictional work in a broad literary context, adds to identifying the features of the hagiographic canon in the story and to considering the plot depicting a righteous man tempted. The story «The Hostess» becomes the object for consideration for the first time as a story about scientist’s professional responsibilities, about scientist’s path. As a protagonist Ordynov will pioneer a new branch of scientific knowledge. Facing the world of criminal sectarianism, he must describe this phenomenon in a scientific paper. The topic he has chosen is venturous and therefore requires a pure soul and a sober mind. The latter correlates withthe the hagiographic features in the character’s image. It also explains his return to asceticism and prayer at the end of the story. The scientist’s passion must turn into scientific knowledge and form the basis for his work.
