DETECTIVE’S IMAGE TRANSFORMATION IN POSTMODERN DETECTIVE NOVELS

Annotation

The article investigates the transformation of the detective’s image in the novels of postmodernist writers Thomas Pynchon and Paul Auster — «The Crying of Lot 49», «Vineland», «Inherent Vice», «The New York Trilogy». The relevance of the work is due to studying the genre features of postmodern literature. One of the ways to create new genres in postmodernism is through playing with the conventions of popular literature genres. There is a convention for the detective genre which is the image of the detective. The author of the article analyzes the image of the detective in six novels by Thomas Pynchon and Paul Auster and proves that the main source of the game is the hardboiled detective formula. The United States literature sees the hardboiled detective became one of the most vivid varieties of the modernist detective novel. The author of the article uses an interdisciplinary approach and proves that postmodernist writers prefer not only to rethink the formulas of the hardboiled detective story. They create a model of postmodern detective novel in which the attention is on the image of the multiverse and on the person searching for their identity. The results of the study provide a basis for analyzing the transformation of the detective’s image in the postmodern literature of other countries.
