Annotation

Studying the way Petr. L. Lavrov’s ideas are exemplified in Ivan S. Turgenev’s creative reception proves relevant due to the social philosophy of «gradualism from below» that is propagated in the «Nov» overlapping the program of «revolutionary culturalism». While working on the «Nov», Turgenev maintained an active dialogue with Lavrov, approved the third version of the «Program» that appeared in his revolutionary magazine «Forward!», and shared the goal of encouraging common people towards social reforms. In this regard, the article aims at analyzing the ideas the writer and the revolutionary populism theorist shared. They believed that such work should rely on understanding people’s needs and knowing the laws of people’s life development that changes in public life should be carried out in the interests of the people and by the people themselves. The article shows that Lavrov aspired for an inevitable social revolution, while Turgenev championed peaceful, gradual development as a way to achieve a better future for Russia. Nevertheless, Lavrov’s ideas had a certain impact on the interpreting the image of Solomin in the novel «Nov». Analyzing the creative dialogue between Turgenev and Lavrov helps to specify the writer’s views of the «gradualism from below». The findings reveal that Turgenev’s «gradualism from below», which substantiated not political, but cultural and educational forms of social transformation, anticipated the strategy and tactics of ideological «Going to the People» movement by the cultural branch in the reformist populism of the 1880–1890s, i.e., the second stage of «Going to the People». Reflecting on Lavrov’s ideas coincides with studying the novel in the paradigm of Turgenev’s social evolutionism. The leading research methods are comparative historical and typological.
