Annotation
The article deals with the issues of literary works within the literary cycle, in particular, it examines meals as an important element of narration in children`s detective
stories of the famous English writer Enid Blyton. The first five novels of the cycle «The Famous Five» (21 works) are analyzed as a material. The paper`s main purpose, related to the description of meal as a cycle-forming element within the narration, logically concerns the problems of the functions of the repeated elements, their connection with the genre of the work and the prospective recipient. The author`s methodology, based on the use of qualitative methods such as motive analysis, compositional analysis, functional analysis allowed to come to some interesting conclusions and observations. The author considers that the description of a meal in a children’s detective story creates the general background, regulating children`s daily routine, and indicating the time when this or that action takes place within the storyline. The functional distribution, according to the author, satisfies the general focus of children’s literature: to instruct and to entertain. Thus, considering the instructional part, when describing a meal, such aspect as behavior at the table is regulated, and considering the entertainment, the meal can be regarded as a pleasant pastime. The conclusions, observations and illustrative material can be useful for both — the theory of literature and its practice, for example, for creative writing. The further analyses should be applied to the repetition of such elements within one novel and within several novels of a cycle in a comparative aspect, as well as to the development of a specific authorial plot model of a children’s detective story.
